DENIS ALEXANDROV

Denis Alexandrov was born in 1971 in Leningrad.
His development as an artist took place in the late 1980s and early 1990s. His teacher was the artist and theorist of "neo-academism" Denis Egelsky, who was a colleague of Timur Novikov, the founder of the most significant and integral trend in Russian art of the 90s.

In paintings by Denis Alexandrov the influence of the neo-academism principles is evident: his appeal to classical samples in art and architecture with contemporary perception and steady craftsmanship. His monochrome painting style not only resembles the grisaille technique, which was invented in Ancient Rome and gained its popularity in the Middle Ages, but also creates a connection with the graphic experiments of pop artists who gave a new life to familiar images.

The series of works "1812" made in wood and bronze was developed with Denis Egelsky. It is inspired by the medallions of Fyodor Tolstoy, a Russian artist, sculptor and medallist of the XIX century, known for his works about the victory in the Patriotic War.

Denis Alexandrov is also known as one of the founders and activists of the Rechniki art group, founded in 1988. The members of the group made videos, costumed performances and were pioneers of Russian pyroart.

The artist's works are in the collections of the State Russian Museum, the Museum of Urban Sculpture, the Central Exhibition Hall Manege in St.Petersburg, in private collections in Russia, the USA and Germany.

THE FACETS

Personal Exhibition at the LUCH Gallery
January 27 - February 25, 2024

Nudes and saints, war and peace, sculpture and architecture, spiritual and secular… How to link all these different topics into one statement? What unites these works, besides the technique and the author?

Denis Alexandrov is known as one of the founders and activists of the Rechniki art group, which was a pioneer of Russian pyroart and since 1988 held fiery performances, performed at festivals and museums of international and Russian venues and programs. Metal, steel, welding, open airs, pyrotechnics, fire, risk, burns, injuries, youthful and historical ardor. As circumstances and conditions change, the worldview changes.

A Professor of the New Academy of Fine Arts Denis Egelsky taught Denis Alexandrov how to draw and passed on some art secrets. In 2008 their collaborative exhibition was held at the New Academy of Fine Arts, some of those works are presented at "The Facets" Exhibition. The paintings "Children", "Phenomenon", the columns, the boards were also created as a collaborative projects of artists. The paintings depicting columns are based on photographs by Stas Makarov.

Neo-academists appeal to classical art and architecture, they have a contemporary perception and steady craftsmanship.

This exhibition is about the multi-faceted world and the way of life, about spiritual search and finding faith, about the ability to be self-faceted.
